Privacy Policy

This site collects no personal information about you. There are no accounts, no sign-up forms, no newsletter, no advertising and no analytics. The sections below describe the two places where any data touches this site at all, and what would have to change before that stops being true.
Who is responsible

Because the site is aimed at readers in Canada, this policy follows the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the ten fair information principles it is built on.
What we do not collect
To be specific rather than reassuring: this site sets no tracking cookies, runs no analytics script, embeds no social media widgets, loads no third-party fonts or scripts, has no contact form, no comment section, no login, and no mailing list. We cannot tell you what you looked at, because we do not know.
The two exceptions, in full
1. Your theme preference, stored on your own device
If you use the light/dark toggle in the header, your choice is saved in your browser's
local storage under the key bbr-theme. This is not a cookie, it is never
sent to us or to anyone else, and it never leaves your device. Clearing your browser's
site data removes it. If you never touch the toggle, nothing is stored.
2. Server access logs at our hosting provider
The site is hosted by Infomaniak Network SA in Switzerland. Like every web server, theirs records requests: IP address, time, the page requested, the referring page and your browser's user-agent string. These logs exist to keep the service running and secure — they are technical records, not a profile, and we do not use them to build one, analyse behaviour, or identify individuals. We do not export them, combine them with anything else, or share them.
Retention and access are governed by Infomaniak's own policy as our service provider. Because they are located in Switzerland, requests from Canada are served from, and logged in, Switzerland.
Links to government sites
Every status on this site links to the authority that issued it. Once you follow such a link you are on that authority's site, under their privacy practices, not ours. We have no visibility into what happens there and no control over it.
Your rights under PIPEDA
PIPEDA gives you the right to know whether an organisation holds personal information about you, to access it, to challenge its accuracy, and to complain about how it is handled. You may exercise any of these by writing to info@firebancanada.com.
In practice, the honest answer to an access request today is that we hold nothing about you beyond what may appear in our host's server logs, which we cannot search by person. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
This site is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone, including children.
When this policy will change
Two planned features would collect personal information, and neither is live yet:
- Fire ban alerts by email. Signing up would mean giving us an email address and an area to watch. That is personal information, it would need your consent, and this policy will describe it — including how to unsubscribe and how long we keep the address — before the feature ships, not after.
- Affiliate links or advertising. Either would introduce third-party requests from your browser, which is a change in what leaves your device. It will be disclosed here and on the pages that carry it.
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be described rather than quietly folded in.
